When I discovered that I could merge my musical, sonic, and compositional thinking with the tools and paradigms of interactivity, I found a space that brought together all my aesthetic, artistic, and intellectual interests. The nature of interactive media and electroacoustic composition inherently involves the integration of multiple disciplines — something that has always fascinated me, especially where science and technology converge with art.
In my work as an electroacoustic composer and sound designer, these three areas form the foundation of my practice. I move fluidly between them, always seeking to express my interests through sound in its various forms and manifestations. I have never viewed composition and sound design as separate practices: each nourishes the other.
My compositional work is shaped by hands-on sonic experimentation, while my sound design is always informed by compositional and musical thinking. Both find common ground in interactivity and the creative possibilities it opens up — a framework for exploring, designing, and creating with sound in a non-linear way. Interactive sound, music, and interactivity as a compositional resource are the elastic bridges that connect my practice to both the physical and digital worlds.
María Castro (Bogotá, 1998) is a Colombian electroacoustic composer and sound artist whose work explores the intersection of music, interactivity and technology. She holds a degree in Contemporary Composition from Universidad El Bosque and a Master's in Electroacoustic Composition and New Technologies from CSKG.
Her practice integrates electroacoustic composition, soundscapes and sound design across a range of contexts — from concert music and interactive installations to contemporary dance, performance and non-linear media. She uses digital tools and interactive paradigms to explore new forms of sonic expression in both physical and virtual environments, always grounded in the convergence of multiple disciplines where music, sound and interactivity act as bridges between the physical and digital worlds.
Inspired by pioneering women in electronic and electroacoustic music, her work is driven by open experimentation and the exploration of new forms of sonic interaction. Her music has been presented at international festivals including Sonido Futuro at Círculo de Bellas Artes (Spain), Ars Electronica Forum Wallis (Switzerland), Q-O2 Experimental Music and Sound Art (Belgium), Canal Connect, BAH Festival, MIGRATS – DANSA CCCC and Festival Paralelo (Colombia).
She currently works as a Senior Audio Designer at NoBrakesGames, leading sound design and technical audio integration for international video game projects.
