Álvaro Cáceres and María Castro, are a Madrid-based duo whose practice sits at the intersection of live coding, free improvisation and electroacoustic music. Their work investigates the relationship between algorithmic processes and organic instrumentation, building hybrid performance systems in which code and sound exist in continuous bidirectional dialogue rather than a hierarchical relationship of control.
Drawing on the political and aesthetic values inherent to live coding — open code, horizontal human-machine dialogue, and glitch as legitimate creative expression — they develop real-time systems combining SuperCollider, Strudel, modular synthesis and processed voice through OSC and MIDI communication. In their performances, the algorithm is not a compositional tool but an interlocutor: a presence that responds, resists and surprises.
Sonically, their work moves beyond the historical association of live coding with IDM and EDM, incorporating noise, musique concrète and orchestral textures. Field recordings function as documentary material, anchoring abstract sound in specific places, conflicts and social realities. Their practice is rooted in the traditions of free improvisation and experimental electroacoustic music, while remaining firmly situated in the present moment of live coded performance.
